Meaning:*
This name derives from the Latin “mamma > mămilla > mămillānus,” meaning “of mamilius, breast, breast-shaped, nozzle to release the water, hole, tap.” Saint Mamilian was bishop of Palermo in the fifth century who lived in Sicily at a time when the Vandals ruled the island. The Mamiliă family was a plebeian family from Rome during the Republic period. The family was initially one of Tusculum’s most distinguished families, and indeed in the whole of Latium. Octavius Mamilius († 498 BC) was Princeps (leader, the prince) of Tusculum, an ancient city of Latium. He was the son-in-law of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the seventh and last king of Rome.
