The name derives from the Hebrew "Baṯ-šeḇa' > Be'êr sheba' > Barsheba", which means "son of the oath". It is a name of biblical origin, brought by two different characters in the Acts of the Apostles. The name day is celebrated on 11 December in memory of Saint Barsaba, abbot, one of the Persian martyrs.
