old norse
GANDR áLFR

This name derives from the Old Norse name “Gandalfr”, composed of two elements: “gandr” (magic, charm, magic wand, witchcraft) plus “álfr” (elf, supernatural being, to shine, gleam). In turn the name means “a protective spirit who wields a magical wand”. Gandalf is a Dvergr (Norse dwarf) in Norse mythology, appearing in the poem Völuspá, the Poetic Edda, and the Prose Edda.
