goddard M

germanic
*GUDą *HARDUZ / *HARDU- > GODEHARD

This name derives from the Old High German name “Godehard”, composed of two elements: “*gudą” (god, deity, divine being) plus “*harduz / *hardu-” (hard, strong, brave, valiant, powerful). In turn the name means “strong by God, as strong as God”. The Goddard family was a prominent landed family chiefly living in the northern region of the English counties of Wiltshire and Hampshire and the western part of Berkshire, between the Tudor period and the late modern era.
