This name derives from the Akkadian (Babylonian) “ištar". Ishtar is the Assyrian and Babylonian goddess of fertility, war, love, and sex. She is the counterpart to the Sumerian “Inanna” and to the cognate north-west Semitic goddess “Astarte”.
