celtic
MUIR GEAL / MUIREALL

This name derives from Celtic “muir geal / Muireall” composed of two elements: “muir” (sea) plus “geal” (bright). The name Muriel is found in the Breton, Irish, and Scottish Gaelic languages. The variant form Merial was very common in mediaeval England. Muriel was mainly used in Scotland at first, although it became popular outside the country in the early 20th century.
