This name derives from the Latin “Pătrĭcĭus,” meaning “nobleman, patrician, of noble lineage, ancestry,” from “patres” nominative plural of “Pătĕr,” which in turn derives from the Proto-Italic “*patēr,” meaning “father, head of household.” The term “Patrician” originally referred to a group of elite families in Ancient Rome, including both their natural and adopted members. In the late Roman Empire, the class was broadened to include high council officials.
