It is a name of medieval origin from the Latin “perla”, meaning “pearl”. This name came into popular use along with other gemstone names during the late Victorian Era. It may also have been inspired by the name Margaret and Gyöngyi, which means "pearl", in fact the Greek “Margaritēs (μαργαρίτης)” means “pearl”. The word is related to “Marg” from “Marq” or “Marka” meaning "chicken", probably because pearls looked like small bird eggs. It is an auspicious name, which was imposed on young girls which wished to be beautiful and precious as pearls.
